Being self employed is not that easy and I can see how it would impact the economy in a negative way.

I do see your point in how it may not be the best for any economy but speaking for myself, I cannot worry about everyone else while I'm looking for work. Great post.

I came across an LA Times article on July 21st where Robert Reich, UC Berkeley Public Policy professor and Clinton Administration Labor Secretary, said that if you’re out of work and over 55, you’re not likely to enter the workforce again. What a gloomy prediction. 55?!!

I’ve been saying for quite a while now that it’s time for a new model. Of course there is risk involved in being self-employed, but these days the once secure corporate job is at high risk as well. The old practice of staying with a big corporation your whole working life is becoming more and more obsolete. So instead of betting on those companies to keep you afloat, take control of your future and build a business on the skills you’ve created. Call the shots, make the rules, build a new model. That’s what my business partner and I did ten years ago and we never looked back. It was scary, but well worth the risk.

We wrote a blog post about this very topic on July 23rd if you’re interested. My name links to my blog.

I believe your later comments are more likely to be true. I.e. many people living on a shoe-string or worse actually subbing their own incomes with savings or even loans. I myself am in this situation and have been for over 18 months now. After redundancy from a high salary job my redundancy money has long gone and I have sold my house and am now basically using that money to prop up my pathetic income from self-employment. Self employment can be the best thing in the world and I would love to be on the position where I could earn enough to pay all the bills but the reality for many is not that wonderfull.
