Canadian banks primarily originate and hold the loans on their balance sheets. We've also tended to avoid higher-risk lending practices such as subprime and Alt-A mortgages. Until a year ago, Canadian banks were prohibited from providing residential mortgages with loan-to-value (LTV) ratios greater than 75% unless they were insured by the government [that percentage was recently increased to 80%]. Insurance was subject to proper underwriting standards, including complete documentation, disclosure, and analysis of the customer. Since our last recession in the early 1990s, Canadian lending standards have remained quite disciplined. Importantly, we make a concerted effort to really know our customers based on a proper credit assessment. And we never offered teaser rates, option arms, or other exotic features.

I do see your point in how it may not be the best for any economy but speaking for myself, I cannot worry about everyone else while I'm looking for work. Great post.
